Given recent years and the global economic situation, many of the British population believe that the future of our country lies in the hands of our engineering pioneers-to-be. Here lies the importance of Design and Technology as a statutory subject within the curriculum. Britain’s prospects for recovery and future growth in 2011 and beyond are based on high value sectors such as engineering, advanced manufacturing, design and the creative industries – sectors in which Britain is still highly competitive. D&T is currently a statutory subject in National Curricula in the UK and plays a key role in providing the skills required by these sectors. It inspires children to follow careers in design, engineering and the creative industries – the careers of the 21st Century, and it provides all children with an opportunity to develop creative and practical skills which will equip them for life in a modern, technological society. |
It is a unique subject, because children and young people:
- Make design decisions that matter to the users of the products and services and to the wider world
- Draw on a wide range of knowledge to solve problems in relevant, real life contexts
- Develop an enterprising attitude and take risks
- See opportunities and make things happen
- Enjoy, value and are motivated by the subject

JONATHON IVE CBE If ever there was an advertisement for the possibilities granted by an education in design in England, then Jonathon Ive is it. Born in London, 1967. Studied Industrial Design at Northumbria University, 1985. Appointed senior vice-president of design at Apple, 2005. Jonathon, the son of a Design & Technology teacher, co-founded the design consultancy agency Tangerine shortly after graduating. He soon found his work as a consultant to be far less design based than he desired, and often found the work that he did to to be unappreciated - noticeably a sink design for one client that was harshly rejected (this being the job that many people believe convinced him to move to America). Shortly after a consultation with Apple, however, Ive was offered a design job ini California. |

As a head of the design team, Ive has been majorly involved in the launch of Apple's most successful products of the 21st century - from the revolutionary and colourful iMac machine of 1998, to the iPod's and iPhone's still being developed today. Ive is known all over the globe as the creative genius behind Apple's grasp on the technological world, and in 2006 was awarded a CBE for services to the Design Industry. Jonathon now lives in San Francisco with his wife and twin children - the benefit of a long and prosperous career forged in design, following an early education in design back home in England. His story not only shows how a design career can personally benefit somebody, but also how design affects us on a daily basis - the development of his designs to create products that are globally recognised and purchased... you don't have to search hard to find someone with an iPod or iPhone these days! |
